New Application store from Apple – App Store for Macs

Apple Inc.’s store for downloadable programs that will run on its Mac line of computers will open January 6 2011, the latest expansion of the company’s digital-download business model that has helped drive sales of its iPhone and iPad mobile devices.

“The App Store revolutionized mobile apps,” Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said Thursday in a statement, referring to the digital bazaar created for his company’s mobile products. “We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun.”

Two months ago, the Cupertino, Calif.-based consumer electronics giant said it would expand the downloadable app model to include programs for its computers. The company, however, didn’t give a date for the store’s opening.

The Mac App Store comes as Apple attempts to capitalize on the popularity of its iPhones and iPads to sell more of its computers. Apple said it sold nearly 40 million iPhones in the fiscal year ended Sept. 25, roughly double the previous year. By comparison, the company sold about 13.7 million desktop and laptop computers, up 31% from the prior year.

Analysts say Apple’s app store has been a key driver of the company’s mobile device sales. Apple launched the app store in 2008 and gives 70% of the revenue to developers, who write the programs. The company now offers a catalogue of more than 300,000 applications, ranging from business productivity to games, which have been downloaded 7 billion times.
