1) Norway

Norway, one of the most thinly populated countries in Europe, tops the list of most prosperous countries in the world. The country, which has a population of a little under 5 million according to latest estimates, has rich resources of oil, natural gas, hydroelectric power, forests, and minerals.

2) Denmark


A traditional Danish town


Another Scandinavian country Denmark ranks second. A constitutional monarchy, it has a mixed market capitalist economy and a large welfare state.

3) Finland

Norway and Denmark’s Nordic neighbour Finland comes third on the list. The country where the global telecom giant Finland topped the list last year.

4 & 5) Australia & New Zealand

The next two spots are taken up by the two countries from Down Under with Australia at the fourth place and New Zealand at 5.

The prosperity index is based on 89 variables over 110 countries, grouped into eight sub-indices, and claims to comprehensively rank the level of prosperity in 110 nations of the world.

India has slipped 10 places to the 88th spot, way below neighbouring China, in the World Prosperity Index due to poor healthcare and education systems coupled with weak entrepreneurial infrastructure.
While last year, India stood at 78th position, according to London-based Legatum Institute that compiled the index.
