A thin but energetic Steve Jobs made a surprise return to the spotlight on Wednesday, taking the stage to unveil Apple Inc’s new iPad and drawing a standing ovation.

The Silicon Valley legend has been out on medical leave since late January and his reappearance, in trademark turtleneck and jeans, bolstered Apple shares and reassured investors and fans worried about his health.

Defying speculation in some tabloid reports that he was seriously ailing, Jobs took swipes at rivals and mocked competing tablet computers. Striding back and forth across the stage at the Yerba Buena Center, Jobs spoke passionately about the iPad 2’s features as No. 2 and heir apparent Tim Cook looked on.

The $499 device is thinner than the iPhone 4, twice as fast as the last tablet, camera-equipped, and ships March 11 in the United States and March 25 in 26 more countries. The surprisingly fast roll-out highlights the fierce competition in the tablet market.

‘We’ve been working on this product for a while and I just didn’t want to miss today,’ Jobs told a packed auditorium in San Francisco with his characteristic flair and energy.

With a touch screen that measures 7 inches diagonally, nearly three shorter than the iPad, the Tab is good – but not good enough.

It’s a bit more portable than the iPad, but has a smaller screen to play with.

This in-between size – bigger and heavier than a smart phone, smaller and lighter than an iPad – made for an in-between experience.

It runs Google’s Android operating system, which is mostly used for smart phones. That makes it well-suited to surfing the Web, watching videos and reading e-books with Amazon’s Kindle app.

A number of applications from the Android Marketplace looked fine on the Tab’s screen, but they don’t all magnify to fill up the available space.

Speaking of cameras, that’s another feature that the Tab has but the iPad doesn’t. There are two on the Tab: a 1.3-megapixel camera on the front and a 3-megapixel camera on the back, both of which can be used for taking photos or video chatting.

Now consider that the cheapest iPad, which has just Wi-Fi for connecting to the Internet, costs $499, and the decision isn’t so tough.

Those of you who are disappointed for not being able to download the Skyfire 2.0 app will have to wait until Skyfire resumes new purchases from Apple App Store. But still the good news is that flash technology is now supported on iOS.

Immediately after the Skyfire 2.0 app was launched, within hours it became the top selling application in the utility section. According to Skyfire blog the demand for the app is too high and has exceeded their predictions. The Skyfire team is really working hard to increase their capacity and support, and will soon start accepting new purchases via the Apple Store.

With the Skyfire 2.0 app users can bring the much desired flash technology into Apple products. The app works like an internet browser that also supports flash video. There is a video icon, which when clicked, converts the video file into native iPhone media on the fly using the H.264 video codec.
